Polyurethanes are used for static windings (transformers, chokes). They can be welded, in theory, without prior stripping, the insulating layer evaporating with heat (around 360 ¡ã C). They are for this reason called weldable.
They can be of varying colors (green, blue, black, purple), but are mostly light yellow or red. This has no influence on their insulation capacity.
Polyesterimide varnishes are used for rotating machines (motors, alternators, etc.). They are brown in color and are generally referred to as non-weldable because they must be stripped before welding.
Polyimide coated wires are generally used for high performance rotating machines, often working at high temperatures and in a confined atmosphere (TGV, airplanes, nuclear, etc.) and must also be pickled before welding.
